This mandatory health insurance information page is for domestic graduate students. All international graduate students are required to carry student health insurance, at the same rates as posted below, and the cost will be automatically added to your student account. International students who wish to waive out of the UNLV student health insurance must contact the office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) for further information. Also, any international graduate students with insurance questions must contact ISS directly. New Health Insurance Requirements for Domestic Graduate and Professional Students Starting Fall 2013
In May 2013, the Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) passed a motion to recommend that all fully admitted graduate and professional students taking 9 credits or more per semester (*effective Fall 2014 Law Students taking 12 credits or more), and all graduate assistants, must have health insurance coverage either through UNLV or their own carrier. In June 2013, the NSHE Board of Regents supported and approved this proposal. As a result, the mandatory hard waiver student health insurance policy is in effect immediately for the Fall 2013 semester.
What Does This Mean?
Students who are admitted into a graduate or professional program and are enrolled in 9 credits or more (regardless of the course level) in a semester (*Effective Fall 2014 Law Students taking 12 credits or more), and all graduate assistants, will be automatically billed for student health insurance. It is then incumbent upon those students who already have health insurance to complete the UNLV online waiver form to waive out of the UNLV student health insurance. Once approved, a health insurance waiver is good for one academic year.
Will my Health Insurance Fee be included in my Financial Aid?
Students who would like to have their UNLV graduate health insurance fees considered as part of their educational expenses may complete a cost of attendance appeal with the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office.
In some instances, students may be considered for additional federal student loans to help pay their health insurance costs. The contact information for the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, as well as additional information regarding the cost of attendance appeal process, can be found at the Financial Aid site.
In terms of financial aid disbursements, for full time graduate and professional students and GAs who have the health insurance fee on your student account, this could impact any financial aid refund you may be expecting to receive. However, if you submit a waiver and are approved, the health insurance fee will be removed from your account and a refund for the difference would be returned to the student from Financial Aid. When Can I Submit a Health Insurance Waiver?
After the health insurance fee appears on your Student Account, you will have to wait three business days before you are able to submit your health insurance fee waiver. This is the amount of time it takes for your information to be sent to our health insurance carrier, Wells Fargo; once they have it, you will be recognized in their system as a UNLV student impacted by the mandatory health insurance policy, and thereby able to submit a waiver. If you attempt to submit a waiver before the 3 full business day timeline, you will not be recognized by the Wells Fargo system and your waiver will not process.
What Are the Minimum Requirements to Waive Out of the UNLV Health Insurance?
Your health insurance policy must be comparable to, or more comprehensive than, the coverage offered through the UNLV Student Health Insurance Plan (see below). You will also be allowed to waive out if you are insured through any of the following programs:
What Information Will I Need to Complete the Waiver Form?

What Happens After I Complete the Waiver Form?
Once a waiver is approved, Student Cashiering will remove the health insurance charged from the student’s account within 7–10 days. If a student receives a denied waiver, he or she will be given a box that allows them to fill in their appeal and submit the appeal to the UNLV Grad waiver inbox (email@example.com). If a student exits out of that screen and does not enter an appeal, but later on wishes to file one, their waiver denial email will direct them to send their email directly to the UNLV Grad waiver inbox (firstname.lastname@example.org). Students will be notified of the appeal decision in writing via RebelMail. The appeal decision is final.
What is the Deadline to Submit a Waiver?
Friday, September 26th, 2014, is the deadline to submit a waiver to waive out of the UNLV Student Health Insurance. The waiver link will be turned off on September 27th, 2014. Thus, if you fail to submit your waiver by the end of the day on September 26th, you will be required to pay the cost for student health insurance and late fees will be charged if the student health insurance fee is not paid by September 29th, 2014. This is non-negotiable. The Spring 2015 deadline is February 27, 2015.
What is the Cost of Insurance for the 2014-2015 Academic Year?
Here is the breakdown of the cost for the UNLV Graduate & Professional Student Health Insurance for domestic and international students in academic year 2014-15:
Annual (8/16/14 - 8/15/15): $2,205.86
Fall: (8/16/14 - 1/11/15): $901.00
Spring/Summer: (1/12/15 - 8/15/15) $1,304.86
Please note that all graduate and professional students who do not waive out of the UNLV Student Health Insurance for the spring semester will be enrolled in the Spring/Summer insurance plan; these are combined and there is not an option to be enrolled in Spring only.
Do I have to Enroll My Dependents?

Do I have the Option of Purchasing other Coverage and Submitting a Waiver for the Spring Semester?
Yes. If you obtain other coverage for the Spring semester, you will need to contact UNLV at: email@example.com.
I am an Admitted Graduate Student, but I am Neither Enrolled in 9 Credits Nor a GA. Can I Still Enroll in the UNLV Student Health Insurance Plan?
Yes, all admitted graduate and professional students are eligible to enroll in the UNLV graduate student health insurance plan. If you do not fall in either required category (i.e., 9 or more credits or a GA) then you will need to contact Wells-Fargo to enroll in the student health insurance plan and receive the discounted UNLV graduate and professional student rates.
