If you have been selected to receive a graduate assistantship, simply follow these steps:
- Send notification to the Office of Graduate Student Financial Services, via e-mail or letter, that you’re accepting the graduate assistantship you were offered. If you opt to mail a letter of acceptance, please send it to:
ATTN: Graduate Student Financial Services
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Graduate College
FDH 352
Box 451017
4505 S. Maryland Parkway,
Las Vegas, NV 89154-1017
- Gather documents that establish both your identity and your employment eligibility. Consult the list of acceptable documents for more information. International students who are graduate assistants must contact the Office of International Students and Scholars to request a work permit letter each semester while under contract. Please note that failure to do so may result in the delaying of your tuition waiver.
- Sign your contract. The Graduate College holds designated signing times from the end of July through August. Watch for more information on the Graduate College homepage in the "News and Events" box. The offer letter you receive from the Graduate College will also outline the signing dates and times.
Please note: To receive your tuition reduction assistance, you must be registered for classes prior to signing your contract.
- Attend Graduate College and the Teaching and Learning Center orientations. All new graduate assistants are required to attend the Graduate College orientation. The Teaching and Learning Center orientation is recommended for those who teach classes.
Working Outside
If you plan to accept employment either on or off campus, you must first receive approval from your department chairperson, followed by the Graduate College dean. Your employment must be limited in nature and related to your area of study. It is important that you follow the approval process, as failure to do so may result in the termination of your assistantship. Complete the request for additional employment form (PDF) to begin the approval process.
**International students, please note: You are not permitted to work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year. Thus, your 20-hour-per-week assistantship should be your sole occupation.
